Tunisisk stickning / Tunisian knitting

Rätan / Right side

Avigsidan / The wrong side

Tunisian crochet is apparently a fairly well-known concept, even if I as a non-crocheted not had heard about it. But Tunisian knitting is much more unknown, although it has been published in a knitting dictionary called Treasury of Knitting Patterns. I have no idea if it has something to do with Tunisia, maybe it just reminds of Tunisian crochet in appearance? The result is more crochet- than knit like.

Anyhow, now Jessica Meredith has used this technique for a small baby cardigan, and is now to get it test knitted by a group at Free Pattern Testers on Ravelry. It is not difficult in any way once you get it, but the journey there was long and winding, I can assure you. The discussions have been many and long about how it is explained to be as intended. The main reason for the confusion is probably that the original statement was meant for those who knit in the so-called English way and not the continental way - or is it vice versa, isn’t it continental we do up here in cold North? Anyway, it was very confusing in the beginning, but now has probably most of us been trapped in it. I figured it out on the third attempt, unfortunately it was hard to see before you had done a bit.

As I said, it’s not complicated at all, just yarn over and slipped stitches. On the first – wrong side - row you take the yarn from under the needle, up over the right needle and back again – just in the opposite way as a common yarn over - lift the next stitch knit wise, bring the yarn towards you under the needle and then back again over it, slip next stitch knit wise etc. Then on the next - right - row the stitches are knitted together two and two in the back loop. How complicated can it be? Well, quite complicated, apparently, before you get it. But the result seems to be fun and a bit different, very tight and yet elastic.

Extravaganza

Now I have finished Extravaganza, a capelette that I have test knit for Marleen van der Vorst Eggermont I have made it for Karin, hope she will likes it. I knitted it in doubble Kid Merino from Crystal Palace. It was quick and easy to knit, now it only remains to see if it can be used. A bit wide at the neck, I think, as opposed to the bottom which might be a little narrow team to be really practical.

Now I will continue with the Tunisian knitting. Yes, it is a knitting technique, even if it’s almost unknown. Will tell more about it later.

Startitis

Oh, ljuva sommar!

Oh, lovely summer! It's 16 degrees C, the rain is dancing on the windows and the sky has a marvelous colour of all the grey tones in the world. And if you don't have to stay indoors you can go out and let the water that is pushed up by the passing cars flow through your sandals and tickle your toes. And besides that we have the swine flue . What a luck, everybody has something to talk about!

But it's more serious with Startitis, this strange disease. It comes and goes completely unpredictable. Some periods shows not the slightest symptom, it can actually go several days. Then it hits you with full effect, without any warning. And now I have been hit hard.

I got the opportunity to test knit a capelete in the mohair, which would be perfect for Karin. Of course I couldn’t resist that. It’s fast done and expect to get it finished in a few days time.

Now I’ve just completed Tor with circular yoke, It's just some buttons left. But now I feel that I just have to make a pair of trousers for it, it can simply not be avoided. It is literally screaming for a pair.

Even the other little baby sweater in the wrap model, which I picked from my own head, is moving forward. But it is so awfully slow, as small it is, so I’m afraid it will take another while before I will get it finished. And I must admit I have began to be a bit wondering about it. I doubt it will turn out as I thought it should do :-(

The top-down sweater I knit for myself is also growing, even if slowly. It is actually quite deliberately, intend to save it for future car journeys in a weeks time.

The Rainbow Chain blanket is unfortunately not given the attention it deserves, do not know why. Or maybe I do, it's a bit slow with three balls launched all the time. But eventually it will probably be both finished and nice.

And so to last but not least, a completely new technique have been revealed to me. Tunisian knitting, had actually never heard of it until a few days ago. It’s also a test knitting, a little baby cardigan. And who am I to resist such a thing? I have just done a few rows, so far, so it is a bit early for a picture, it will come later.

By the way, my first gift from my Secret Pal 14 arrived yesterday. I became quite surprised when I opened my e-mail box last night and found a message with an attached gift certificate of two patterns from Twist Collective. Lovely patterns, no doubt about that, and I’m sure I will find something there. It was definitely nothing that I had expected to get! Now I looks forward to see what she will comes up with in August.

Mountain View

En liten filt har sett dagens ljus. Mjuk och go, stickad i Marks & Kattens Karusell, 100 % merino.

A small blanket has been finished now. It’s soft and cosy, knitted in Mark’s & Kattens’s Karusell, 100 % merino. It’s a test knitting for Lynne Dowe. Unfortunately I realised, when it was washed, that I should have had a smaller needle for it, I think the lace pattern got a bit too big holes. But folded in the pram I hope it will keep our little Bud warm, in spite of that.

Now I’m finished with one of my ideas. It’s a quite thick sweater, knitted in Drop's Karisma with needles no 5,5 mm. The size became a bit larger than I had intended, but it is not the whole world. Not that bad, if I may say so myself. However, all patterns are supposed to have a name, haven’t they? It feels a bit silly, but since I actually intend to publish the pattern, it will need one. And the first that strucked me when I began to think about it was Tor. I think the slipped stitches looks a little bit like thunder-bolts.

But perhaps it would be better with a circular yoke, instead of raglan? I couldn’t resist giving that idea a try as well, but it didn’t tur out well at all. But with that new idea well-rooted in my head I couldn’t get rid of it, so I tried it in another way instead. I will do this one with Cygnet's Wool Rich Aran and with needles no 5 mm, so it will probably be a bit
smaller. It isn't much of it yet, so it remains to seen if it will be anything with it or if I will frog that, too.

Lately I have began to get ideas, lots of ideas, the head is full of them. What should I do? My ideas rarely (read never) bring something good with them, but they haunt me ... it would be much better if I could keep on with others well thought out and perhaps even tried patterns, but what can a poor weak human being do?

I am still on my first try (well, the second try on my first idea) the baby wrap cardigan. Yes, that’s a story. So far I have always had a gauge of 28 st when I have knitted in common sock yarn with needle 2.5 mm. Always so far at least. And because of that I started with it without doing a swatch first. I was so convinced about the gauge, so it would just have been a waist of time to do one, wouldn’t it? And I knitted, and knitted and knitted, and never get anywhere with it. I have never done something so slow before, as far as I can remember. So eventually I decided to – in spite of being as convinced as I was – check up the gauge. Oops, it turned out to be 34! No wonder that this little creature ever seems to come to an end. I really can’t understand how it could be like this, but that’s the fact. It does not affect the size, because I increased up to desired length, but it is really a lot of very long rows for this little piece!

Just like everybody else, I have an awful lot of leftover yarn laying around, and yesterday evening I have got a completely brilliant idea about what I could use some of it to. A whole bunch of different colours in stripes with slipped stitches, in a baby top-down sweater. Of course I just had to start with it immediately. First I had to count and think and count again, but eventually I started with the knitting and have now done just about half of the yoke. But I will make the sleeves and the body in just one colour, the light grey-blue. I think it will be just too much with those stripes all over it.

More ideas are jumping around, but this was the most intrusive. Then I’m very curious about my other ideas, wonder if I will manage to get something useful out of them. Well, we’ll see, sooner or later!

The small Presto Chango sweater is finished now. Sure it is cute and nice, but I do not like it really. The sides and the sleeves were supposed to be sewn together, but the sides I knitted together, in the same as joining a border to a shawl. It was very gallant. But the sleeves were unable to be solved in this way, so I sewed them together in the traditional way. Oh dear how clumsy it was in this thick yarn! Wondering how others who made it got it smooth.

A little hat with the same pattern as the front of the sweater is on its way, as well. I just have to find out how to decrease the pattern neatly on top of it.

Poor everyone who has started their holiday now. The rain pours down and it is only 15 degrees. What a difference from just a week ago! But hopefully it will turn soon again.

But it doesn’t disturbs me, I will work as usual throughout July and to knit in the evenings is excellent even with the rain patter against the windows.

Now I’m really on my way with Rainbow Chain Blanket, and I think it will be really nice. With the stripes and the colour changes, it is one of those driving things, "just a bit more, have to see how it will be with the next colour ..." Even the small green wool blanket have its fair share of my attention, and it grows a little bit at a time.

But blankets are all very well but not the only things in the world, it's not possible to just keep on with them. Last week I went to my LYS and bought a number of balls of Drops yarn that they had for a sale, it was obviously not possible to resist a price decrease of 40%. And then the temptation to start with a small sweater became too much, so now I’m on with a Presto Chango as well. It goes very fast in Drop’s Paris, compared to the small green wrap sweater, which is growing very slowly despite its small size. But eventually that one will be finished as well, hopefully. I am so curious about how I will manage with it, the first attempt with this pattern was really not that great.

And once again, I have notified me that the test run, this time it is actually a sweater for myself. (I am ashamed, how bad can a Grandma be? Waste time for oneself, when there are a thousands of different things that should be knitted for the grandchildren!) But anyway, this pattern to be tested is very special, and seems quite bright. It is really a template, and not a complete pattern. You choose which yarn to use, enter the gauge in the form together with the desired size of the sweater and then the appropriate numbers of stitches, increases, decreases and so on turns up. It will be very exciting to try. The designer is Catherine Waterfield. Unfortunately, I had not appropriate yarn in sufficient quantity at home, so I have ordered some Rodeo from Kicki's Yarn and think it will arrive fairly soon.

Ett nytt försök / A new try

A while ago I made an attempt with a small wrap cardigan, just after my own head. It was not a big shot, but I couldn’t drop the idea. Now it has matured and I will give it a try again, in a little different way. If the knitting gods are with me maybe it could be something out of it eventually.

Something a bit faster is always fun to now and then, so now I have done a pair of booties and a second pair is on its way. The yarn is Debbie Bliss Rialto, really soft and nice, and the pattern is Ruth's Perfect Baby Booties. May be not that perfect, they have to be sewn together in the back and bottom. No, I am more fond of the ones I’m doing now, Seamless Baby Booties. Not a stitch to sew, that’s what I call perfect!

Furthermore I'm working on the little baby blanket I test knit for Lynne Dowe, Mountain View. I do it with Marks & Kattens Karusell, a lovely soft yarn. I have done about 25% by now.

I have also finished a little baby sweater now. It is The Basic Baby Pullover which I knitted in Wendy DK with wool.

And I just realized that I have forgotten to show the hat I test knitted for Kim Haesemeyer a while ago. It is a bit small, and maybe not exactly the model that I would choose for myself, but I can imagine that it will fit Alex. Do you recognize the yarn? Yes, it is the same as for the booties. And the bright yarn is what I use for the current pair.

Secret Pal 14

I have joined the Secret Pal 14 at Ravelry! I'm so excited about it, and here is the questionaere:

1. What is/are your favourite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely not like?

It depends on the time of the year. Right now I prefer cotton or linen. But never ever I like acrylic!

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?

A plastic bag :-)

3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?

I learned to knit in school, ages and ages ago, but have just knitted regularly the last three years. I think I can say I’m an intermediate knitter.

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?

No

5. What’s your favourite scent?

Just fresh air, I’m not very fond of perfumes and things that smell.

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favourite candy?

No, not really, but I do like dark chocolates very much.

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?

No, unfortunately I have never learned to spin. I used to crochet a lot many years ago, as well as weaved and sewed, but not anymore. It’s just knitting!

8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)

I think I like most kinds of music, classics, folk music, reggae … And yes, I can.

9. What’s your favourite colour(s)? Any colours you just can’t stand?

I like most colours, except pink and orange. But I’m more fond of bright and dark colours than pale ones, and just love multicoloured yarn!!!

10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?

I’m married (with Jan) and have one son (Ulf, who’s living with Helene and they expect their first child in December) and one daughter (Karin, who is married with David, have a son - our beloved Alex – and is expecting their second child in November). But we don’t have any pet.

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?

Scarves and mittens are frequently used but not hats or ponchos.

12. What is/are your favourite item/s to knit?

Oh dear, that change from one day to another! I do love to knit baby/child clothes (they are so fast to do :-)!), but likes very much to do cardigans, sweaters, socks, shawls and whatever for adults as well.

13. What are you knitting right now?

Woops, let me think! Two baby blankets, a pair of booties, one baby sweater, one child sweater, one baby hat, one child hat and am just about to start with a cardigan for Karin. With two expected grand child it is a lot of baby stuffs right now!

14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts?

Yes I would love to – if it is something that I / we can use! I am not very fond of handmade cakes and things like that.

15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminium, plastic?

I never use straight needles, except for dpt, and not even that very often. I use circular ones - and mostly my beloved Knit Pro! - for just about everything, even socks (Magic Loop, you know!)

16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?

Yes, both

17. How old is your oldest UFO?

One and a half year, I think

18. What is your favourite holiday? What winter holiday do you observe?

If I have to choose I think my favourite holiday is spent in a big city, a capital city or something like that. But now and then it’s lovely to be in a small place, too, if it just is enough of museums or other interesting places around. I don’t like to spend the holiday on a beach. A winter holiday will be spent in London, with Karin and her family, I’m not much of a skier!

19. Is there anything that you collect?

No

20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?

I subscribe to Interweave Knits and about books and other patterns, there are so many lovely ones out there but non in particular that I can think of now. But I’m always looking for patterns for children, not the ordinary ones but with exciting motives on. Right now I’m looking for something with trains!

21. Are there any new techniques you’d like to learn?

I’m trying to learn stranded knitting and intarsia. Have done a few things but have still so much to learn about it!

22. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?

Yes, I have done quite some. My foot is just about 21 cm long.

23. When is your birthday?
18th of December

24. Are you on Ravelry? If so, what’s your ID?

Oh yes I am! My ID there is LenaL
