Att göra en crickettröja / How to make a cricket sweater

En dag i somras, närmre bestämt i augusti, fick jag det stora hedersuppdraget att göra en crickettröja till David. Så glad jag blev! Men det visade sig också bli en utmaning av sällan skådat mått. Först och främst, hur ser en crickettröja ut? Är inte speciellt intresserad av sport i allmänhet och cricket i synnerhet, men nåt vitt trodde jag mej veta att det skulle vara. Alltså blev första steget att gå på jakt efter lämpligt mönster, och var om inte på Ravelry kan man finna vad man söker? Hittade till och med två, men den ena såt bättre ut än den andra, så den skulle det bli. Mönstret såldes av Modern Knitting, och ett sådant inhandlades tillsammans med garn. Jovisst skulle den vara vit, med en tvåfärgad bård ovanom muddarna och runt halsen. Flätor skulle det också vara för att det skulle bli korrekt och det är ju inga problem, eller …?

Mönster och garn kom i god ordning, och då kom jag på att jag nog inte läst så noga som jag borde. Mönstret räckte upp till storlek 42”, och våran söte, rare, välbyggde David krävde 50”. Alltså krävdes det en del omräkningar, och var tar man hjälp om inte i den fantastiska boken Knitters Handy Book of Sweater Patterns. Där finns alla storlekar för alla masktätheter – ja, mer eller mindre i alla fall. Men flätor drar väl mer än slätstickning? Hm, provlapp med fläta och slätstickat parti gjordes, och det räknades och räknades om. Till slut trodde jag mej i alla fall veta vad jag höll på med och satte igång. Men det har runnit mycket vatten under bron sen augusti, och den har tagits fram lite nu och då, för speciellt humoristiskt var det inte med den tämligen monotona delen från mudd upp till ärmhål. Men till slut var den biten klar och ärmarna gick sen med en viss fermitet. Lyckades till och med få till det så att flätorna skulle mötas vid raglanintagningen, och det blev jag mäkta stolt över. Men när allt väl var ihopkopplat kom funderingarna på hur lång själva raglanlinjen skulle vara. Vågade inte lita på mönstret helt och fullt, för jag började med v-ringningen tidigare än vad som angavs där, och helst skulle ju maskorna på framstyckena räcka hela vägen upp. Intagning vartannat varv, var tredje, eller …? Beslöt mej för att köra hårt från början och se vad som hände. Men hur lätt är det att mäta och bedöma när det är hopknölat på en sticka? Halvvägs upp, eller vad jag förmodade var halvvägs upp i alla fall, mätte jag första gången och blev helt övertygad om att hela oket skulle bli alldeles för kort, ve och fasa. Försökte mäta mot en av Jans tröjor, men då såg det ut som om det skulle bli för stort! Mätte igen och fick ett tredje mått. Vid det laget började jag förtvivla, och bestämde mej för att inte mäta något mer utan bara fortsätta. Gjorde så, och själva tröjan såg faktiskt skapligt vettig ut i proportionerna när det var dags för att sticka på halskanten. Men jag borde ha börjat med v-ringningen långt tidigare än jag gjorde, en sådan kant som det var tänkt skulle bara inte få plats. Eller rättare, det skulle inte bli plats över för nån hals, och det hade ju inte varit så kul. Så in i det sista fick jag räkna, klura och modifiera, och tröstar mej med att David trots allt inte vet hur det var tänkt att den skulle se ut. Färdig är den nu i alla fall, efter fyra månaders mer eller mindre intensivt arbete, och faktum är att jag tycker den är fin! Nu kan jag bara hoppas och be att storleken ska stämma, för till saken hör att vår David som med sån möda byggt upp sin kropp med diverse godsaker under ett helt långt liv, nu har gått ner åtskilliga kilo sedan i somras. Visst vore det snopet om den hänger som en säck på honom? Om några dagar ska jag skicka iväg den, ska bara göra färdigt motsvarande till Alex. Jag kunde ju inte motstå att börja på en till honom direkt, och den har gått som tåget. Har nu bara oket och därmed samma dilemma som ovan kvar, men har i alla fall lärt mej att börja med v-ringningen tidigare än jag normalt skulle ha gjort.




One day last summer, more exact in August, I had the great honour to make a cricket sweater for David. How glad I was! But it showed up to be a challenge of huge dimensions. First and foremost, how does a cricket sweater looks like? I’m not interested in sports in general and cricket in particular, but I thought I had heard that it ought to be white. So the first step was to search for an appropriate pattern, and where if not at Ravelry? There you can find whatever you're looking for, and I found two of the kind. One looked better than the other, so it had to be that one. The pattern was sold by Modern Knitting, as well as proper yarn. Yes, it should be white, with a bicoloured edging above the cuffs and around the neck. It should be cables as well, and that wouldn’t be any problems, or …?

Patterns and yarn came in good order, and then I realised that I not had read the information as well as I should. The pattern lasted up to size 42", and our dear David called for 50". So, it took some recalculations, and in that situation where to find helps if not in the fantastic book Knitters Handy Book of Sweater Patterns? There are all sizes for all gauges - yes, more or less, at least. But cables draw more than plain knitting doesn’t it? Hm, a swatch with cables as well as stockinet stitches was made, and I counted, and counted again. Finally I thought I knew what I had to do and started it up in good faith. But it has run a lot of water under the bridge since August, and it was just done a little bit now and then at it, because it wasn’t that humorous, very monotonous from the edge to the armpit. But at last the body was finished and then the sleeves were done quite fast and easy. I even managed to get the cables at the sleeves to coop with them at the body when I joined the pieces and started with the raglan decreases. Must say I was quite proud of that. But at that time came the question about how long the actual raglan linen would be. Didn’t dared to trust the pattern completely, because I began with the v-neck decreases earlier than what was said there, and preferably the front pieces stitches should last all the way up. Should I do decreases every second row or every third, or …? Decided to do it every second row from the start and see what happened. But how easy is it to measure and estimate when it is on a needle? Halfway up, or what I presumed was halfway up in any case, I measured the first time and became totally convinced that the whole yoke would be far too short, oh dear. Tried to measure it against one of Jan's sweaters, but then it looked as if it would be too big! Measured again and got a third answer. By then I began to despair, and decided not measure any more, but just continue. Did so, and the sweater finally was finished and ready for the v-neck edge it actually looked quite sensible. But I should have started with the v-neck decreases much earlier than I did. The edge at the pattern was much too wide to be able to get on it. Or, it would not be room for a neck in it, and it had not been that fun, had it? So in the end, I got to count, figure and modify again, and comforts me with that David after all do not know what it was intended to look like. In any case, now it’s finished after four months of more or less intensive work, and the fact is that I think it looks nice! Now I just hope and pray that it will fit, because everything I do tend to be too big, and besides that David has lost several kilos since last summer. It would be disappointing if it will hang as a sack on him. In a few days time I will send it to him, I will just finish the similar one for Alex. I couldn't resist starting one for him directly, and that one has been fast done so far. (How many Alex-sweaters are there in one David-sweater?) Now I only have the yoke left and am in the same dilemma as above, but in any case the experience with David’s taught me to start with the v-neck earlier than I normally would do.
